The Nebraska racetrack of Horseman's Park first opened its gates on 3rd January 1998, and is situated in Omaha, just 4 miles away from its famous, now closed, neighbour Ak-sar-ben racecourse. Racing is administered by the Nebraska Horsemans Benevolent Association who first mooted the idea of building a racetrack when the state lost Ak-Sar-Ben in 1996. The track, which is a 5 furlong oval track with separate 7 furlong and 9 furlong chutes, sharing a 225 metre home straight, did not hold its first live thoroughbred meeting until 8thJuly 1998. Its facilities are rudimentary, previously lacking an enclosed grandstand, but it had some benches (bleachers) which could seat 2,800 people. Traditionally, 9 race meetings are held from early May to mid-June. |
